Kinja'd!!!

I inhabit a world where I am both a cable-cutter AND I still want to (legally) pay to watch the Detroit Red Wings ...worse, I live at the very edge of FS-Detroit coverage so I am blacked out on NHL.tv.

Found out today that Sling is now doing a beta with FS Regional availability. My heart skipped a beat. Was this the moment that I had been waiting for since giving up cable where I would be able to watch the Wings play for a song (compared to the cost of cable)?

Of course not. Turns out that according to them I am in coverage for Fox Sports Ohio.

I am not looking for solutions to this complaint knowing full well that they are going to get bounced in the second round anyway.

OK, well keep this in mind for next season then. Find a VPN that has endpoints here in the U.S., but in a different state, far outside of the Red Wings’ home coverage area. Make sure to connect to that VPN before watching their games on NHL.tv.

I did that for 2 years when I wanted to follow the Sabres; had a VPN that had an endpoint somewhere in Colorado.

The legality of (even paid) VPNs for getting around geoblocking is still up for debate but I have thought about it and especially after NHL.tv lowered the pricing and started offering single team packages. Unfortuantely the free options for masking often just reuse your computer as somebody else’s IP so I don’t like that idea.

It’s fine though, I’ve been using the radio for the past two seasons and it hasn’t been that hard. I feel just like my great-grandpappy did back in the 30s (though he was a Bruins fan

Until the last two seasons even their fans didn’t say that.

It’s weird because it is a separate stream from the regular. I think it helps them keep the price down (if they had to pay Fox AND Disney for the same collection, you’d be up to normal cable prices).

wait a second, if you get the Fox package you can’t have ESPN?

Man I guess you can’t have everything. I didn’t see an option for a “pay more for both sports networks” might be down the line though, it does say beta.
